I still remember the day when I first introduced Durga to catnip. I was excited enough to see how she’d react to it, which was completely new and unfamiliar to her. It was like a bit of adventure for both of us, and I was keen to see if it would open a side of her I hadn’t witnessed before.

However, catnip might be a common term for most cat parents. But, it’s a little surprising, many still don’t know what this is and the science behind how it affects a cat’s mood and behavior. In short, I can say from my experience that it is more than just a fun treat — there’s an exciting world behind how it works!

What Is Catnip?

Catnip is a common herb from the mint family. Its scientific name is Nepeta cataria. But what is the magic behind it? Why do cats go wild for it?

It contains a little chemical called nepetalactone, which is found in the seeds, stems, and leaves. When they chew, crush, or roll in catnip, they release more of this irresistible scent that drives them absolutely crazy with joy.

How Does Catnip Influence Feline Behavior?

Cats have a unique scent organ, known as the vomeronasal gland, located on their mouth roof. This organ lets scents from their mouth and nose, which travel directly to their brain cells. That’s why they sometimes make that funny “stinky face” when smelling certain things.

Now the question is, why do cats love catnip so much? How does it influence their behaviors?

Catnip acts like feline sex hormones, so cats often behave like a female in heat when they enjoy it. Interestingly, both male and female cats can experience these effects, and for this reason, it is a favorite treat for all kitties!

If your cat enjoys catnip, you may see some changes in its behavior. It includes

  • Stretching
  • Drooling
  • Increased Alertness
  • Dilated Pupils
  • Increased Desire to Play, Sleep, Rest and Attention from you
  • Relaxation
  • Aggression — If so, you should avoid it for your cat if your cat responds in this way

So, the main thing is each cat reacts in their own unique way!

When Do Cats Start Reacting To Catnip?

The magic starts almost instantly when your cat gets a whiff of catnip. Within seconds, you’ll see the excitement kick in — rolling, purring, and that unmistakable look of bliss. The fun typically lasts around 10–15 minutes, maybe a little more, but don’t expect it to stretch beyond that.

After that, it’s like your kitty needs a break from all the excitement. They enter a little cooldown phase where the catnip loses its charm for a while. It takes about 1–2 hours before they can enjoy that euphoric feeling again. So, after their first “high,” you’ll have to wait for round two!

Is Catnip Similar To A Drug For Cats?

You may wonder why your cat seems so blissed out on catnip. Yes, it is natural to think so, as catnip might give them a high similar to the ones humans experienced in the 60s.

According to a study, when cats sniff catnip, a chemical called nepetalactone kicks into gear. It interacts with cells in their upper airway that activate their body’s opioid system. This triggers the release of natural endorphins, creating that euphoric response, which you can see.

If you’ve ever heard of naloxone — the opioid antidote — cats given this don’t react to catnip, which really backs up the theory. Chewing the herb doesn’t do much, but they might munch on it to release more nepetalactone, especially from dried leaves. While stories of hallucinations are likely exaggerated, catnip is a safe, fun way to give your kitty some short-lived joy.

Catnip isn’t addictive, and your furry friend can’t become dependent on it or overdose. It’s just a fun treat that brings out their playful side for a little while!

What Are The Different Types Of Catnip?

Three types of catnip are available in the market, and I have tried two of them for Durga.

  • Dried Catnip Leaves: Dried catnip was a lifesaver, especially when we relocated. It’s such a convenient option — you can find it in almost any pet store. I used it to help Durga feel calm and relaxed in the new space after our relocation. I just crumbled the leaves and sprinkled them on her favorite toys or on the floor. She absolutely loves it — sniffing, licking, and even rolling around in pure joy! It worked like magic to keep her at ease during the big move.
  • Catnip Sprays: Sprays are a fantastic way to ease into it if you’re just getting started with catnip. I mainly use them when we take Durga on trips. These sprays are made from concentrated catnip oil, and they’ve been a lifesaver during our travels. I just spritz some on the backpack by which we carry her, and it gives her that same catnip excitement without any mess. It’s a clean and fuss-free way to keep her calm and entertained while we’re on the go.
  • Catnip Toys: These toys are pure fun for cats! You can easily find many catnip-infused toys in pet stores and online. They come in various shapes and sizes, like little rats, fish, and more — things cats naturally love. Plus, they’re designed to release an irresistible scent when your cat squeezes or bats at them. It’s such a great way to keep your cat active and mentally stimulated.

How Do You Use Catnip?

Now, let me share what I’ve learned from my own experience with Durga and catnip. There’s definitely a proper way to use it to make the most out of those fun and relaxing moments for your cat!

Always Start Small

When I first introduced catnip to Durga, I quickly realized that less is more. Using it in small amounts keeps the excitement fresh. If you give too much, it might lose its magic over time. I sticked to using it just once or twice a week to make sure she enjoyed it to the fullest every time.

Don’t Ignore to Observe How Your Cat Reacts

Every cat is unique, and this is something I had to pay close attention to with Durga. Most cats, including her, absolutely love their catnip sessions, but some may react differently. So, when you start out, watch your cat closely. Sometimes, they get overly excited or even a bit aggressive. I always keep an eye on Durga during her playtime to make sure it’s a fun experience for both of us.

Introduce variations

Catnip isn’t one-size-fits-all, and I’ve had fun experimenting with different types for Durga. From dried leaves to sprays, I’ve tried them all! It’s really about finding what excites your cat the most. Durga loves the dried leaves most, but every cat has their own preferences, so it’s worth mixing things up.

These little tips have made a world of difference for us, and I’m sure they’ll help you and your cat make the most out of your catnip sessions!

In my experience, catnip has been an incredible way to bring joy, curiosity, and endless entertainment to Durga. It’s more than just fun — it really strengthens the bond we share.

Honestly, while catnip does create a euphoric and playful experience for most cats. But calling it something that gets them “high” as we humans understand, isn’t quite right. It’s more of a temporary burst of pure happiness for them. The effects are short-lived and totally harmless. I’ve always found it to be a natural and safe way to make Durga happy (after our relocation), and it’s been a game changer in keeping her happy and relaxed.
